Overview

A top-level domain (TLD) is the last segment of a domain name, e.g. .com in example.com. TLDs fall into a few broad categories: original generic TLDs (gTLDs) like .com and .org, country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) like .uk and .de, and the large wave of "new gTLDs" like .app and .dev introduced since 2013.

This tool is a searchable reference of the TLDs people actually look up most — which registry runs them, what type they are, and a short note on typical use (including the ccTLDs, like .io and .ai, that are widely used outside their assigned country for their letters alone).

This is a curated list of commonly encountered TLDs, not the full IANA root zone database, which lists over 1,500 delegated TLDs, most of them dormant or highly specialized.

How It Works

  1. Start typing a TLD (e.g. .io), a type (e.g. ccTLD), or a registry name.
  2. The list filters instantly to matching entries as you type.
  3. Clear the field to see the full reference list again.

Common Use Cases

Choosing a TLD for a new project

Compare common TLDs and their typical use before deciding which one fits a new domain name.

Understanding an unfamiliar TLD

Look up what a TLD you've seen actually is — which country or registry it belongs to.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Several ccTLDs (.io, .ai, .co, .me, .tv, .fm) are registered heavily outside their assigned country purely because of what the letters spell — this reference notes that where it applies.
  • Some TLDs (.edu, .gov, .mil) are restricted and can't be registered by the general public, unlike most gTLDs and ccTLDs.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The search runs entirely in your browser against a built-in list — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

No — it's a curated list of the TLDs people encounter and search for most often. The IANA root zone database has well over 1,500 delegated TLDs, most of them dormant or highly specialized new gTLDs not included here.

This tool only shows reference information — registering a domain has to be done through a domain registrar that sells the specific TLD you want.
