UPC/EAN Validator
Check whether a UPC-A, EAN-13, or EAN-8 barcode number has a valid check digit.
Overview
UPC-A (12 digits) and EAN-13/EAN-8 (13 or 8 digits) are the retail barcode formats you'll see on most packaged goods. All three use the same weighted mod-10 checksum: starting from the digit next to the check digit and moving left, weights alternate 3 and 1, and the check digit brings the total to the next multiple of 10.

How It Works
- Enter a 12-digit UPC-A, 13-digit EAN-13, or 8-digit EAN-8 number.
- The tool detects the format from its length and recomputes the check digit.
- It reports whether the barcode number is valid, and the expected check digit if it isn't.
Use Cases
Verifying retail product data
Catch a mistyped UPC/EAN before it goes into a product listing or price lookup.
Checking a barcode you scanned or typed manually
Confirm a number copied from a barcode image is complete and correctly formed.
Tips
- UPC-A and EAN-13 are closely related — a UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading 0, so most EAN-13 scanners read UPC-A codes natively.
