A major engine failure at the United States’ nuclear power plant in New Mexico could result of shutdown of one of the country’s three reactors, the White House said Friday.

The failure of the steam turbine generator at the Vogtle plant, which supplies electricity to about 8,600 customers in the state, could shut down power to about 1.3 million homes and businesses, the New York Times reported.

Gov.

Susana Martinez said in a statement that the failure was a major setback to the state’s economy and that it could have a “devastating impact on the ability of New Mexicans to pay their bills and stay safe in their homes.”

The Associated Press reported that Vogtle officials have begun an investigation and said that the state is monitoring the situation closely.

“Vogtle is a critical component of New Mexico’s power grid and its safety is our top priority,” the governor’s office said in the statement.

“We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates when necessary.”

Vogel said it was working with the New Mexico Department of Environmental Protection to determine how the incident happened.
